If she doesn’t get these calves sorted quickly, some won’t last the day. Each morning, she divides them by age — tiny newborns can get crushed or lose their mothers in the scramble. They need intensive feeding that’s impossible in a mixed herd, and sorting keeps bigger calves from pushing the small ones off their meals. It’s exhausting, never-ending work, but it’s the only way to keep the entire herd alive.
