Join a two-hour summer drive from Japan’s Pacific coast to the mountains of Hakone.
The first half of the journey follows the Shonan coastline through historic Kamakura and Enoshima. We drive beside the sea on Route 134, run alongside the small Enoden railway, pass Enoshima, and continue west along the Seisho Bypass.
After Odawara, the scenery slowly changes from ocean views to green mountains.
From Hakone-Yumoto, the road climbs into Hakone along National Route 1, passing winding mountain roads, historic hot-spring towns, the highlands of Sengokuhara, and finally Lake Ashi.
Kamakura was once the center of Japan’s first samurai government around 800 years ago.
Hakone, meanwhile, was one of the toughest sections of the old Tokaido road connecting Edo, now Tokyo, with Kyoto.
Today these places are peaceful travel destinations, but traces of their long history can still be found everywhere.
The subtitles share not only what you can see along the road, but also stories about Japanese history, culture, local food, and places worth visiting.
From the ocean to the mountains, sit back and enjoy a slow summer road trip through Japan.
