Completed in 1700 by Lord Ikeda Tsunamasa, Okayama Korakuen translates to the “Garden of Later Enjoyment”—a title derived from a classical Confucian proverb advising leaders to put the welfare of the people first and reserve leisure for last. Spanning over 13 hectares, the garden utilizes Shakkei (borrowed scenery), artfully framing Okayama Castle and the surrounding mountains within its traditional Tsukiyama (hill-and-pond) design.
