An hour north of Kyoto Station, the crowds disappear. Ohara (大原) is a small farming village in the mountains where two of Kyoto’s most beautiful temple gardens sit a five-minute walk apart – and most visitors never make it here.
In this 4K walk we spend a slow morning in Ohara: the moss garden and tiny stone Buddhas of Sanzen-in, the famous “framed garden” of Hosen-in – a room designed so that the pillars turn the view into a living painting, served with matcha – and a quiet lunch at a local restaurant. Real sound, no music, no talking.
📍 OHARA – HOW TO GET THERE
• Kyoto Bus No. 17 from Kyoto Station (about 60 min) or from Demachiyanagi Station (about 30 min), get off at “Ohara”
• From the bus stop it’s a 10-minute uphill walk to Sanzen-in along a lane of small shops
• Hosen-in is about 5 minutes further up the same road, past Jikko-in
• Go early – the morning light on the moss is the best, and the 10:00 crowd from Kyoto arrives later
💴 PRICES SEEN IN THIS VIDEO
• Sanzen-in: ¥700 adult
• Hosen-in: ¥800 adult, includes matcha and a sweet served while you sit with the garden
• Lunch at Shino Shomon: about ¥2,000–3,000 per person (seasonal Kyoto set meal)
✅ GOOD TO KNOW
• Sanzen-in’s Yusei-en garden is at its best after rain – the moss turns bright green
• Look for the small “warabe jizo” stone statues hiding in the moss near the Ojo Gokuraku-in hall
• At Hosen-in, sit down and stay – the room is meant to be experienced slowly, with tea, not photographed and left
• Hosen-in’s “blood ceiling” (chitenjo) comes from Fushimi Castle, 1600 – ask staff and they will point it out
• Both temples are mostly outdoors with stairs and gravel; wear shoes you can slip off easily
• Autumn colors here peak in mid-to-late November, about a week before central Kyoto
• Combine with Jakko-in on the other side of the valley if you have a full day
