「嵐山祐斎亭」は、約800年前に造営された後嵯峨・亀山上皇の離宮、亀山殿跡に立地する築150年の明治期の建造物です。

元々は料理旅館「千鳥」という、京都の舞妓、芸妓憧れの地であり、ノーベル文学賞を受賞した文豪・川端康成が逗留し「山の音」を執筆した場所としても知られています。

祐斎亭のある京都・嵐山は、平安時代より風光明媚な景勝地として知られ、源氏物語の舞台となりました。当時の貴族はこの地に別荘を構え、船遊びをして、美しい四季の移り変わりを楽しみました。四季折々の風景は歌に詠まれ、そこから小倉百人一首が生まれました。

祐斎亭の丸窓から眺める桂川は今も翡翠色に輝き、訪れるあなたを1200年前の世界へ誘います。

長い歴史を持つ建物の中で、光によって染色が変化する独自の染色技法「夢こうろ染」を生み出し、国内のみならずヨーロッパ、アジア諸国で高い評価を受ける亭主・祐斎の作品を展示しております。

季節の移り変わりに合わせて変化する日本の自然と空間美、そして唯一無二の世界観アートをゆっくりとおくつろぎいただきながらご堪能ください。

Arashiyama Yusaitei is a 150-year-old Meiji-era building located on the site of Kameyama-den, the villa of Emperor Gosaga and Emperor Kameyama, constructed approximately 800 years ago.

Originally known as the Chidori restaurant and inn, it was a beloved destination for Kyoto’s maiko and geisha. It’s also known as the place where Nobel Prize-winning author Yasunari Kawabata stayed and penned “The Sound of the Mountains.”

Yusaitei’s Arashiyama neighborhood, Kyoto, has been known as a picturesque spot since the Heian period and was the setting for The Tale of Genji. Nobles of the time built villas here, enjoyed boating, and enjoyed the beautiful changing seasons. The changing scenery was often sung in poetry, inspiring the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu collection.

The jade-green Katsura River, visible from the round windows of Yusaitei, still shines, transporting visitors to a world 1,200 years ago.

In this historic building, we exhibit the works of our owner, Yusai, who created the unique dyeing technique “Yume Kouro Dyeing,” in which the dye changes with light, and who has received high praise not only in Japan but also in Europe and Asia.
