On February 25, the annual “Baikasai” (Plum Blossom Festival) was held at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto to herald the arrival of spring. This event is held every year on the anniversary of the passing of Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning who famously loved plum blossoms. During the festival, an outdoor tea ceremony (Nodate) was held on the shrine grounds, where visitors enjoyed tea served by Maiko. With approximately 1,500 plum trees of 50 different varieties currently in full bloom, the blossoms are expected to be on display until late March.
