Step into one of Japan’s most ancient and mystical hot spring villages as I record a peaceful walk through Yunomine Onsen, this super tiny onsen town hidden deep in the mountains of the Kii Peninsula.

On a light rainy day, my friends and I drove into town early enough to see the steam rising from the natural hot spring river flowing through the village. After we wandered past traditional ryokan inns, bathhouses, and cedar-covered mountain slopes, we had to go in for a steam ourselves.

That’s when we learned about Yunomine, and Onsen which is believed to be one of Japan’s oldest hot spring settlements, with nearly 1,800 years of history. Pilgrims walking the sacred Kumano Kodo once stopped here to purify themselves before continuing their journey through the mountains.

Along the river sits Tsuboyu, a tiny wooden bathhouse and the only hot spring bath in the world designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nearby, locals still cook eggs and vegetables in the bubbling mineral waters at the communal hot spring basin known as Yuzutsu.

This real-time walk is filmed with no narration and no music, just the natural sounds of rain, flowing water, and village life in rural Japan.
