琵琶湖疏水の大津から伏見に至る20.2㎞の舟運ルートの途中、水路落差のある2か所に設けられた傾斜鉄道。延長581.8ｍで、建設当時は世界最長。
蹴上船溜に到着した舟を、荷おろしすることなく斜面下の南禅寺船溜まで、舟ごと台車に乗せて斜面を昇降させる目的で建設された傾斜鉄道であり、建設当時は世界最長であった。
蹴上発電所の電力を用いて1891年に営業運転を開始し、1948年の運転を最後に停止した。
現在では散策の場や写真撮影スポットとして多くの人々に親しまれている。

Nanzenji Shrine –
Nanzen-ji (南禅寺, Nanzen-ji), or Zuiryusan Nanzen-ji, formerly Zenrin-ji (禅林寺, Zenrin-ji), is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. Emperor Kameyama established it in 1291 on the site of his previous detached palace. It is also the headquarters of the Nanzen-ji branch of Rinzai Zen. The precincts of Nanzen-ji are a nationally designated Historic Site and the Hōjō gardens a Place of Scenic Beauty. The temple was destroyed in a fire in 1895 and rebuilt in 1909.

Keage Incline
An incline railway running from the Keage Boat Reservoir (upstream) to the Nanzenji Boat Reservoir (downstream). With a total length of 582 meters, the Keage Incline was the longest incline railway in the world at the time it was built. The incline railway allowed a boat to ascend the height difference of approximately 36 meters without unloading its cargo. The boat was loaded onto a trolley, and carried by the same mechanical principle used for cable cars. The rails of the incline are preserved as they were, and you can walk along them. It is a popular tourist spot, especially in spring when there are cherry blossoms splendidly blooming on both sides of the railway.
