For more than a thousand years, people have looked at the same moon from this part of Kyoto.
Daikakuji Temple has deep connections with Japan’s imperial history, and beside it lies Osawa Pond, one of the oldest surviving garden ponds in Japan.
During the season of the harvest moon, the pond becomes especially meaningful.
The tradition of moon viewing, known as Tsukimi, has been enjoyed in Japan for centuries. At Daikakuji, the moon reflected on the still water of Osawa Pond creates a scene that feels connected to the elegant culture of the Heian period.
Even during the daytime, walking through the quiet corridors, historic buildings, gardens, and along the pond, it is easy to imagine how people centuries ago experienced this same landscape beneath the autumn moon.
This is more than a beautiful temple.
It is a place where nature, history, and the moon have quietly shared the same scenery for generations.
Thank you for walking with me.
